Monday, July 11th Resting Pulse: 52 bpm Weight: 168 lbs. Course: The Wrecking Yard Distance: 4 Miles Time: 36:56 Other Exercises: None Weather: Mostly Cloudy, 72° Comments: I ran four miles at an easy pace and felt like crap the whole way. I was scanning headlines online and I clicked a link to a story about three climbers who'd been killed up by rockfall in the North Cascades. To my shock, I knew one of them, Jo Backus. A few years ago, when I was still a member of the Mountaineers, I took a snowshoeing course. Jo was one of the instructors. She was also the leader of most of the snowshoe outings I did. We barely knew each other, and I doubt I would have recognized her on the street—maybe if she'd been wearing a hat, gloves, a parka, and a backpack—but seeing her name in the article made me gasp. It's easy for me to dismiss most outdoor accidents as a result of carelessness or bad planning, but I know Jo was cautious and thorough. Sometimes bad luck bites the best of us in the ass, and I don't like to be reminded of that. I'm sorry that bad luck caught up with Jo. WARR: T-minus 68 Days |
