Dawg Dash 5k

Resting Pulse: Not Recorded
Weight: Not Recorded
Course: Dawg Dash 5k
Distance: 5K (5 Miles with Warm-up/Cool-down)
Time: 20:05
Other Exercises: None
Weather: Partly Cloudy

Comments: Today's race went poorly. I started out okay, going through the first mile in 6:11, but I started struggling shortly thereafter. By the last half-mile I was completed gassed. Other runners were passing me in droves. The sole highlight of the race was that I managed to beat the first dog AND the first baby stroller. I guess I shouldn't expect to run great 5k's on minimal training.

I saw Greg and Laurie at the race, which surprised me, even though I think I knew they were going to be there. Besides Jake, none of my "normal" friends did any running, so now it's nice to have some familiar faces to look for. Hopefully, I'll see them at another race sometime.

Later in the day, a few guests came to the house to wish me happy birthday. After the left, Angie and I headed down to the Dog and Pony for a birthday beer. A few friends showed up, and I had a good time.

Resting Pulse: Not Recorded
Weight: Not Recorded
Course: North Side West
Distance: 3 Miles
Time: Not Timed
Other Exercises: None
Weather: Mostly Cloudy, 56°

Comments: I ran a light three miles today, mostly to get warmed up and stretched-out for tomorrow's race. I'm so terribly out of shape I don't know why I bothered really. I'm going to get my ass handed to me.

Angie spent the afternoon at a baby shower, and after she came back we headed up to Troy's for clam chowder and steak.

Thursday, October 27th

Resting Pulse: Not Recorded
Weight: 165 lbs.
Course: None
Distance: Zero
Time: N/A
Other Exercises: None

Comments: I finally mowed the lawn. Alas, this left me little time, daylight, or inclination to go for a run. So, I didn't run.

Wednesday, October 26th

Resting Pulse: Not Recorded
Weight: 165 lbs.
Course: The Wrecking Yard
Distance: 4 Miles
Time: 35:17
Other Exercises: None
Weather: Partly Cloudy, 56°

Comments: I ran an easy four miles today. I still need to mow the lawn. The weather was nice enough that I could have done it today, but it was already starting to get dark by the time I finished my run, so I skipped it. If I don't mow it soon, I'm going to need farm equipment to get through it.

Tuesday, October 25th

Resting Pulse: Not Recorded
Weight: 165 lbs.
Course: North Side West
Distance: 3 Miles
Time: 27:53
Other Exercises: None
Weather: Light Rain, 52°

Comments: I lost valuable running time stuck in traffic. It seems like every day there is a different disabled semi mucking up my commute. I managed to squeeze in a quick three-mile jog after I finally got home, but it was already growing dark. I'm not looking forward to the end of daylight saving time, as it means more gloomy runs like this one. At least I got in some miles, I suppose.

Monday, October 24th

Resting Pulse: Not Recorded
Weight: 165 lbs.
Course: None
Distance: Zero
Time: N/A
Other Exercises: None
Weather: N/A

Comments: Today was a planned rest day—no workout. Since I neglected to mow the lawn this weekend, I really should have mowed it today. I went grocery shopping instead. The grass is getting really shaggy, and I hope the weather stays dry enough this week that I can get it cut before it overgrows the house.

Distance: Zero

Other Exercises: None
Weather: N/A

Comments: I didn't feel so good this morning. I got a little carried away in Bellingham. Angie's sister is a bad influence; however, I ran into some old X-C buddies, and their influence was much, much worse. I ended the night at a dance club. I don't usually like dance clubs. Get enough drinks in me, though, and I go to town. Last night, I went to town.

Needless to say, when I woke up this morning, I felt like crap. Even the thought of running went straight out the window.

Saturday, October 22nd

Resting Pulse: Not Recorded
Weight: Not Recorded
Course: None
Distance: Zero
Time: N/A
Other Exercises: None
Weather: N/A

Comments: I mowed my parents lawn this morning. It was a little more work than I anticipated. I should have mowed my lawn as well, but I was too worn out by the time I got home. I was also too worn out to run. Angie and I are leaving in a little bit to go visit her sister in Bellingham, so the day is just beginning.

Friday, October 21st

Resting Pulse: 56 bpm
Weight: 165 lbs.
Course: The Wrecking Yard
Distance: 4 Miles
Time: 36:26
Other Exercises: None
Weather: Clear, 67°

Comments: I finally managed to go for a run this week. I did an easy four-mile jog. Boy, did I feel slow. The weather has been unseasonably warm the last few days, and that has brought out the bugs. About halfway into my run, a moth flew into my left eye, just before a mosquito flew into my right eye. Some things never change.

Weather: N/A

Comments: I skipped my workout so I could help my mom with her computer. I wasn't able to fix it, alas. The thing is loaded with malware and hijackers. I couldn't even do a Google search to sort out the problems. Guess we'll have to send this on to the pros.

Weight: 165 lbs.
Course: None

Monday, October 17th

Resting Pulse: Not Recorded
Weight: 163 lbs.
Course: None
Distance: Zero
Time: N/A
Other Exercises: None
Weather: N/A

Comments: Today was a planned rest day—no workout. My left hamstring hurts; it is tight and sore from yesterday's effort. I guess I ran too hard on too little training.

Angie and I invited my mom to dinner. She came over and we ate curry and caught up on family gossip. I enjoyed it.

Sunday, October 16th
Fort Casey Orienteering

Resting Pulse: Not Recorded
Weight: Not Recorded
Course: Fort Casey Orienteering
Distance: 3.8k (5 Miles Total)
Time: 38:41
Other Exercises: None
Weather: Cloudy, Cool, Windy

Comments: I competed in an orienteering event at Fort Casey today. The navigation was relatively easy, but I made one colossal blunder that cost me around two minutes. I saw that control #7 was on the gun emplacements, but I forgot there were two distinct sets. I sprinted to the visible set to the southwest, but the control was near the set to the southeast, which was obscured by a ridge. The leg from #2 to #3 was the longest leg of the course, and it was also directly into the wind. The gusts made it difficult to read the map because it folded back on itself. I also had to use my free hand to keep my hat clamped onto my head. Besides those two legs, I was satisfied with my race.

On the way home from Fort Casey, Angie and I stopped at the Diamond Knot Brewery for lunch. They brought out our sandwiches on a plate with a heated lava stone. We cooked our meat on the stone at the table. Even though we had to work for our food, it was quite delicious.

Comments: I didn't really have time to run. I woke up early to help move Rich and Julie into their new house. I took most of the day, and while there was a little bit of sunlight left when I got home, I didn't have the energy to step out for a jog.

Resting Pulse: Not Recorded
Weight: 165 lbs.
Course: The Wrecking Yard
Distance: 4 Miles
Time: 34:41
Other Exercises: None
Weather: Partly Cloudy, 61°

Comments: I skipped the push-ups and sit-ups today, but I managed to squeeze in a four-mile jog. Some day I'll manage to do push-ups, sit-ups, and a run all on the same day—some wonderful, magical day.

Wednesday, October 12th

Resting Pulse: Not Recorded
Weight: 165 lbs.
Course: None
Distance: Zero
Time: N/A
Other Exercises: Sit-ups, Push-ups

Comments: I didn't run today. Like a wuss, I didn't feel like going out in the rain. I managed to do some sit-ups and push-ups though.

Tuesday, October 11th

Resting Pulse: 58 bpm
Weight: 164 lbs.
Course: The Wrecking Yard
Distance: 4 Miles
Time: 34:38
Other Exercises: None
Weather: Partly Cloudy, 62°

Comments: I ran four miles at an easy pace. My run of sit-ups and push-ups didn't last too long, as I skipped them today. My arms and chest were sore from yesterday's efforts, which is kind of sad because I only managed about 10 push-ups before I had to quit.

Monday, October 10th

Resting Pulse: 62 bpm
Weight: 164 lbs.
Course: None
Distance: Zero
Time: N/A
Other Exercises: Sit-ups, Push-ups
Weather: N/A

Comments: Today was a planned rest day—no running workout. I am trying to do push-ups and sit-ups every morning. We'll see how long that lasts.

Angie and I saw Serenity. I enjoyed the movie. I didn't think it quite lived up to the hype, but I never saw any episodes of Firefly, so maybe I missed a few things that might have pushed it from great to super-awesome.

Sunday, October 9th

Resting Pulse: Not Recorded
Weight: Not Recorded
Course: None
Distance: Zero
Time: N/A
Other Exercises: None
Weather: N/A

Comments: I took today off. My ass was sore from running up and down the many hills on yesterday's orienteering course, and I felt lazy. I'm considering this week a false start to my new training program. I hope to be more consistent next week.

I went "pumpkin hunting" in the afternoon with Angie, Greg, Laurie, Jake, and Troy. I managed to bring down three pumpkins. One of them sustained slight stem damage on the drive home, but the rest of the trophies are in pristine shape. Soon they will be mounted and displayed on my front porch for all to enjoy.

Forest Park Orienteering

Resting Pulse: Not Recorded
Weight: Not Recorded
Course: Course Three
Distance: 5.5k (4 Miles Total)
Time: 28:03
Other Exercises: None
Weather: Partly Cloudy, Warm, Breezy

Comments: If I weren't in such lousy shape, I would have done much better at today's orienteering meet. It was a pure runner's course. The navigation was easy, and the only real mistake I made was right at the start. The route to control number one was along the same line as the route from 10 to 11. Well, I ran to number 11 first. I didn't go too far out of the way, but I imagine it cost me some time—maybe even the 29 seconds by which Jake beat me.

Friday, October 7th

Resting Pulse: 66 bpm
Weight: 163 lbs.
Course: None
Distance: Zero
Time: N/A
Other Exercises: None
Weather: N/A

Comments: I skipped another run. I still need to get back into the swing of things when it comes to workouts. My only real goal at the moment is building mileage for a 30k in February. That seems far off right now, making it hard to focus. Before I know it, though, it will be January.

Thursday, October 6th

Resting Pulse: Not Recorded
Weight: 163 lbs.
Course: None
Distance: Zero
Time: N/A
Other Exercises: None
Weather: N/A

Comments: I intended to run today, but I wasn't feeling well. Angie's been sick for the past week, and now I'm starting to develop the symptoms of a cold. Today, however, in addition to my stuffy nose and sneezing, I had . . . intestinal problems. I'm sure taking an extra rest day this week is the right thing to do, but I'm still disappointed that I couldn't make it more than two days into my schedule without altering it.

Resting Pulse: Not Recorded
Weight: 163 lbs.
Course: Soos Creek Trail
Distance: 4 Miles
Time: 35:40
Other Exercises: None
Weather: Cloudy, 60°

Comments: I had a little bit of soreness during my run today. It didn't bother me too much. I was mostly distressed by how slowly I was moving. Three weeks off, and now I'm back at square one.

Tuesday, October 4th

Resting Pulse: Not Recorded
Weight: 163 lbs.
Course: The Wrecking Yard
Distance: 4 Miles
Time: 37:37
Other Exercises: None
Weather: Partly Cloudy, 60°

Comments: My first run in 16 days hurt a little bit. I'm not surprised.

I've signed up for Nanowrimo again this year. Last year I planned to use it as a springboard to developing a daily writing habit. It didn't take. I've written all of 700 words of original fiction since the contest ended last year. That's hardly the prolific output I envisioned. Maybe this year it'll stick.

To get ready for the challenge, I've started waking up an hour early and putting in some keyboard time. I'm mostly just catching my running journal up to speed, but I'll start outlining my project soon. As much as I've tried, I can't put in the extra work in the evenings. I'm less distracted in the morning for some reason.

I have to admit, I do like this year's participant icon. (Can you ever imagine why?):

Comments: Today was a planned rest day—no workout. I guess today was really the last day of my hiatus, not yesterday. I did manage to mow the lawn though. That always feels like a bit of a workout. My back and arms felt a little sore today from the lifting and carrying I did yesterday, reminding me that I'll probably be sore after my first couple of runs this week. Damn. I hate feeling sore.

Comments: Today was the last day of my two-week running hiatus. I helped J-Glo move, however, so I got something of a workout anyhow.

Last night's soccer game turned out to be quite exciting. It was the USL Championship, and the game went into overtime, ultimately coming down to a shoot-out. The Sounders managed to eke out the win. The only downside came just after halftime. Two guys showed up late and sat in the row in front of us. Their cologne was so strong it nearly overwhelmed me. Angie spent the rest of the game with her turtleneck pulled up over her mouth and nose to avoid gagging. The guy directly in front of me was leaning to the side to escape the wafting fumes, and he bent himself practically into the next seat. I could hear the guys behind me muttering and complaining about the odor too. I swear I could feel my nose-hair curling.

Comments: I've been back from my trip to England for a couple of days now, but I'm still getting back into the swing of things. I really need to mow the lawn, but it's been raining so much today, I don't think it's going to happen. Angie and I are heading out in a little bit to get dinner before we go to a Sounders game with Jake. I should probably stick close to home and sort things out instead of going to a soccer game, but what's the fun in that?

Here's a picture of Big Ben and a double-decker bus I took in London. It's your reward for reading this boring update.
