Resting Pulse: Not Recorded
Weight: 164 lbs.
Course: The Wrecking Yard
Distance: 4 Miles
Time: 35:09
Other Exercises: Core (8 Min.)
Weather: Cloudy, 38°

Comments: Once again, today's expected severe weather was a no-show. My morning jog was pleasant, if a bit cold. I didn't see any birds during my four-miler today, but I could hear a rather raucous Steller's Jay scolding me as I ran too near his perch.

Angie and I learned the basic Waltz steps at dance class tonight. The dance is much easier than I expected. I also learned that I make a "dance face." It kept sending Angie into fits of hysterical laughter. I didn't even realize I was doing anything.

Resting Pulse: Not Recorded
Weight: 165 lbs.
Course: The Wrecking Yard
Distance: 4 Miles
Time: 36:25
Other Exercises: Core (8 min.)
Weather: Rain, 37°

Comments: I jogged an easy four miles this morning. I stepped in quite a few slushy puddles, which made my feet cold, but my legs were fine. I felt rather spry, actually. I spotted what I think was a Varied Thrush. I didn't get a good look though; he flitted off when I stopped to peer at him.

Last night's predicted storm wasn't quite as bad as prognosticated, but the weathermen say we're in store for worse tonight. Stupid hills make commuting in slippery conditions no fun at all.

Comments: Today was a planned rest day—no workout.

Things iced up pretty good last night, making for an interesting commute this morning. I hit a patch of ice, and my truck fishtailed across two lanes of traffic. Luckily, there weren't any other cars around, and I managed to keep enough control to avoid smashing into the barriers on either side of the road. Supposedly, it's going to snow tonight, which would make things even worse tomorrow. However, this is Seattle. The more they hype up a big storm, the less likely it's going to happen.

Resting Pulse: Not Recorded
Weight: Not Recorded
Course: The Wrecking Yard
Distance: 4 Miles
Time: 35:23
Other Exercises: None
Weather: Partly Sunny, 48°

Comments: Originally, I'd intended to run six miles. I was thinking about turning back because my hamstrings felt incredibly tight. Then, just where I needed to turn around to make the run a four-miler, my nose started gushing blood. That made up my mind for me. I cut the run short, and headed back. I tried to staunch the flow of blood with my sleeve, but that just made a bloody mess of things. It figured that this was the one day I chose to wear a white shirt.

Resting Pulse: Not Recorded
Weight: Not Recorded
Course: Pit Bull Run
Distance: 6 Miles
Time: 52:21
Other Exercises: None
Weather: Partly Sunny, 44°

Comments: This was the longest run I'd done in some time. I felt quite tired the time I finished. I didn't think the last mile would ever end. After I finished, I tried to mow the lawn. The lawnmower crapped out on me though. I ended up buying a reel mower to replace it, and so far I love it. It's actually easier to move than the self-propelled rotary mower. It also cuts better.

We'll see how long my lawn-mowing enthusiasm lasts. I'm guessing not too long.

Comments: I thought I might make up for skipping yesterday's workout by putting in a few quick miles this morning, but it didn't happen. I slept in instead. I had a lot of difficulty getting out of bed, much less getting out the door for a run. Thanksgiving dinner tasted pretty good though.

Comments: I intended to run this morning, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. When I looked at the thermometer and saw 33° I started waffling about whether or not to go. Finally, I realized I'd waffled so long, I'd run out of time to go at all. I did manage to squeeze in a core workout though.

Comments: I ran an easy four miles this morning. I felt really slow. I usually take Monday off, but I skipped my run yesterday, so I thought I'd make it up today, especially since I'll probably take this Thursday off, it being Thanksgiving and all.

Resting Pulse: Not Recorded
Weight: Not Recorded
Course: Marymoor Park Orienteering Course #5
Distance: 5.0K (5 Miles Total)
Time: 39:58
Other Exercises: None
Weather: Cloudy

Comments: My one goal for this event was breaking 40 minutes. I just managed it. I would have been quite a bit faster if I hadn't run past control number 11. I thought I had cut into the open forest from the path early so I kept pushing through until I ran into a stream. When I found the stream on the map, I realized I was well past where I needed to be. Turns out I hadn't cut in early at all, but late. I got stuck in some blackberry brambles too. They pulled my hat right off of my head and left some scratches on my scalp. Good times.

Resting Pulse: 60 bpm
Weight: 166 lbs.
Course: The Shrieking Shack
Distance: 4 Miles
Time: 36:54

Comments: I made it through another four mile jog in the fog this morning. The soreness in my legs is almost gone, although my abs are another story.

Resting Pulse: Not Recorded
Weight: 164 lbs.
Course: The Wrecking Yard
Distance: 4 Miles
Time: 36:26

Weather: Foggy, 45°

Comments: I went for an easy run in the fog this morning. I felt pretty sore, especially my abs, which aren't used to doing any core work at all, much less three days in a row.

Wednesday, November 16th

Resting Pulse: Not Recorded
Weight: 165 lbs.
Course: The Wrecking Yard
Distance: 4 Miles
Time: 35:35
Other Exercises: Core
Weather: Mostly Cloudy, 42°

Comments: I ran an easy four miles this morning. I didn't feel as stiff as I did yesterday, but I was a little sore. Along the way I could hear Spotted Towhees calling, even though I couldn't see them. They are one of a handful of birds I can identify by ear. I did see a Northern Flicker. He was pecking away at a telephone pole. I can identify Northern Flickers by ear too, but this one wasn't making any noise beside the thwack of his skull against treated lumber.

So far I'm liking the morning runs.

Weight: 165 lbs.
Course: The Wrecking Yard
Distance: 4 Miles
Time: 38:14
Other Exercises: Core
Weather: Partly Cloudy, 37°

Comments: I switched my schedule around so I can run in the morning. This morning I ran an easy four. I felt pretty rusty, but I've basically taken two months off, so that shouldn't be a surprise. It was cold this morning. A thin layer of frost coated nearly everything. If the winter continues on like this, I may need to get more cold-weather gear.

Comments: Today was a planned rest day—no workout.

I had a little trouble with my truck at the grocery store. It wouldn't start. I tried to jumpstart it, but that wasn't working either. Finally, this guy came over to help me out. He noticed that the positive post on the battery was really corroded. He cleaned it off for me, and the truck started fine afterward. I'm generally embarrassed about how little I know about cars, and I might have had my truck towed for what turned out to be an easy fix. Thank goodness for that guy.

Comments: Still not running.

I won tickets to today's Seahawk game in a company raffle. The seats were in the company suite. We had pizza, hot dogs, beer, popcorn, peanuts, and chips and salsa. We were out of the rain, and the box was heated. We had a private bathroom (which Angie especially liked). To top it off, the Seahawks won. I could get used to watching games from there.

Comments: I'm still gripped with a massive lack of motivation to run. I skipped another workout today. The countdown, however, is on. I have a 30k trail race in February, and I want to do well. When I ran it in 2004, I placed fourth overall. This year I want to crack the top three. I need to start training or I'll be lucky to finish it at all.

I decided to quit Nanowrimo today. I'm too far behind to catch up without putting in a Herculean effort. I'm going to keep writing, but at a pace I can manage: 500 to 1000 words per day. It may take me six months to write a 100,000 word manuscript, but at least I won't hate it when I'm done (or so my theory goes).

Comments: I had the day off from work for the holiday. I slept in late and puttered around all evening. It seems like the more time I have to get things done, the less time I'll spend getting things done. Another one of those vicious circle things. Still, it felt nice to do nothing all day.

Comments: Another day with no run. I had dance lessons in the evening, and I had to stay late at work. Between those two things, I didn't have enough time to squeeze in a run. Dance lesson went much better this week than last week, mostly because Angie and I decided not to swap partners. We danced with each other the whole class. (We weren't the only couple to do so, so it's not like we're huge rebels or anything.) We also started to learn the tango, which felt more like dancing to me than the fox trot did.

I may need to abandon Nanowrimo. I'm just not feeling it this year. Maybe I can add some real depth over the three-day weekend, but I'm really not interested in my story anymore. I may have to re-start from scratch.

Comments: I still haven't started working out. The less I workout, the less willing I am to workout. It's one of those vicious cycle things.

I managed to write a small amount today. I am really having trouble this year. I know I can get the words on the paper; I just don't care about this story. The idea of starting over is distasteful because I'd have to make up a lot of ground, and I just don't feel like working that hard on something that will probably never amount to anything.

Comments: Yesterday evening I went to over to Jake's for a poker tournament with the guys. I went from being short-stacked and on the edge of going out, to tripling my chip count on one hand, to winning three more all-ins to take the chip lead. Eventually, it came down to Jake and me. He went all in and I called him. We ended up tying with a pair of Kings. In Texas Hold 'em ties split the pot. I asked Jake if he'd rather just split the winnings even and call it a night. He did. But between the booze and the late night, I was in no mood to run when I woke this morning. So I didn't. I didn't write either.

Time: 40:35

Weather: Rain, Cool

Comments: I competed in an orienteering meet today. I didn't do too poorly, given my out-of-shapeness. I've found that I actually do fairly well when I'm not running fast; I tend to navigate better. I did make one major mistake though. Going from 5 to 6, I didn't realize I was holding my map upside down, so I ran to control 9 accidentally. Oops. That cost me some time.

There's a section of mostly overgrown trails in the park that I've nicknamed "the Maze" because I always get lost when I go into it. Luckily, there was only one control in the Maze this time. I ran all the way around the outside of the Maze to get at it from the shortest distance. I don't know if I gained time or lost time. With the exception of control 6, everything went smoothly, and I was satisfied with my route choices.

I didn't do any writing today.

Comments: I'm still on hiatus, so no running today. Angie and I drove out to North Bend to see the house Mr. and Mrs. The Cap'n just bought. It's a nice place, even if it is halfway up Snoqualmie Pass. I noticed that it sure gets dark away from the city lights.

I didn't do any writing today.

Comments: I didn't run again today. I've decided to put off training until next week. Hey, why not. I'd like to get in shape sooner rather than later, but I've had too many distractions recently. Today, for instance, I noticed that all of my expensive landscaping is washing away in the rain. I tried to take some pictures to send to the landscapers so they can tell me how to fix it, but it was so dark by the time I got home I couldn't manage a decent shot.

At least I got a little bit of writing done—more than yesterday, for sure. I've got a bad feeling it's all crap, but it's getting on the page.

Comments: I forgot that Angie and I had our first ballroom dance lesson tonight, so I didn't prepare to run immediately after work, thinking I would have more time than I did. Also, the traffic on the drive home was so hideous it took me twice as long as usual. I honestly ran out of time to run. Yes, it was due to poor planning and forgetfulness on part, but the bottom line was: no workout.

So, I mentioned I'm taking ballroom dance lessons. I've always wanted to learn, but always felt goofy about it. Tonight I remembered why: I'm terribly clumsy, and I have poor rhythm. It didn't help that we had to keep switching partners. I don't really care to dance with anyone besides Angie, much less women two feet shorter than me. The jury is still out on the decision to take this class.

I didn't get a whole lot of writing done today, but I'm still plugging away.

Comments: I didn't run today. It was dark by the time I got home, not to mention rainy and cold. Also, I wanted to get a good jump on my Nanowrimo project. Most years I've only managed a couple hundred words—if any—on the first day. I thought I could do better than that, and I did. I think this would be going easier if I'd actually thought of story to tell before this morning, but I think I can pull it off.
